What to have ready

• The title, for each tractor or trailer you’re selling. Titles in a company’s name need a person who can sign for the company.
• Two forms of ID from whoever signs. Illinois requires a scrap buyer to record them from a private seller, one being a driver’s license or State ID (625 ILCS 5/5-401.3).
• Any lien cleared. Commercial trucks are often financed; read junking a vehicle with a lien if one is still open.
• Plates and registration. Take the plates off and close out the registration with the state as you normally would when a unit leaves your fleet.

Where these trucks sit, and what a pickup needs

Heavy vehicles are usually parked in places built for them, but access still decides the day. Tell us:

• The spot: a truck yard, a shop lot, a business’s back lot or a driveway.
• Gate hours and who lets us in.
• Clearance and ground: overhead wires, low branches, and whether the lot is paved, gravel or soft ground.
• How it’s resting: whether the truck builds air, if the tires hold, and whether a trailer is still coupled or sitting on its landing gear.

Local codes also push old trucks off residential streets. In Calumet City, section 90-323 bars overnight street parking for trucks and other commercial vehicles. Lansing’s section 38-201 keeps semis and buses out of residential and commercial districts altogether. If a dead truck is parked where it shouldn’t be, quote it now; same-day pickup is often possible.

What moves the offer

Size and weight count for more on a truck than on a car, but completeness is still the second question: engine, transmission, rear axles, the box or trailer, a liftgate, and tires all matter.
