Cash for scrap cars

What is a scrap car worth?

A scrap car is worth mostly its metal, so weight, completeness and the day's scrap prices set the number. Gold Cash for Junk Cars buys scrap cars around Calumet City even when parts are missing, gives the offer by phone, tows free and pays at pickup by cash, Zelle or Cash App.

Some cars are past being cars. The body has rusted through, a fire took the interior, or someone has spent years pulling parts until only the shell is left. Those are scrap cars, and they still sell. What you are selling at that point is mostly metal, and metal has a market.

How a scrap car is valued

Four things drive the number, roughly in this order:

  1. Weight. A full-size pickup or SUV has much more steel than a compact sedan.
  2. Completeness. Engine, transmission, wheels and the catalytic converter all add value. Each missing piece lowers it.
  3. The scrap market that week. Metal prices change, which is why we quote each car fresh instead of posting a price list.
  4. Papers. Illinois requires proof of ownership even for a scrap sale. Without it, there may be no sale at all; see selling without a title.

Location matters less than people think, because the tow is free across our area. The longer version of this is in what a junkyard pays for a car.

Its next stop

A scrap car ends up with a scrap processor that holds an Illinois license. Illinois law has those processors record each vehicle with the seller’s ID and ownership papers and keep those records for three years (625 ILCS 5/5-401.3). That’s one reason we ask the questions we do before pickup; the paperwork follows the car. If you want to understand who does what between yards, buyers and processors, read junkyard or junk car buyer.

Partly stripped cars and project leftovers

Take a half-finished project: someone pulled the engine or the doors, and the rest has been sitting. That’s still a sale. It also helps you with village rules. Burnham’s bulk trash pickup won’t take engine blocks, transmissions or axles, and several of our villages treat a dismantled car in view as a nuisance. A whole or partial car is one pickup for us.

Before the driver comes

  • Take out anything personal, including the glove box and trunk.
  • Take the plates off; in Illinois they stay with you.
  • Have the title or agreed papers and two forms of ID.
  • Tell us about anything that makes loading harder: no wheels, a car on blocks, a tight side yard.

Cash, Zelle or Cash App: your choice, paid at pickup.

Towns we cover

We pick up scrap cars from every town on our locations page, including Burnham, Thornton and Ford Heights. If the “scrap” is actually a pickup or a van, see junk trucks, vans and SUVs; if it’s a car that simply won’t start, see non-running cars.

Questions people ask

Do you buy a car with the engine already pulled?
Yes. A car missing its engine, transmission or wheels still has scrap value. Tell us what is missing so the offer on the phone matches what we load.
Can I sell you loose parts, like a catalytic converter or an engine block?
We buy whole vehicles, including incomplete ones. Ask on the call about loose parts; we will tell you straight if it's something we take.
Why can't you give me a price per ton on the site?
Scrap metal prices move, and each car's weight and completeness differ, so a posted number would be wrong for most cars. We quote each car on the phone.
Should I junk the car or scrap it?
For a seller they end up the same: the car goes to a buyer who pays for it and it is recycled. Our article on junkyards versus junk car buyers explains who does what.
