Route from 920 Harding Ave: Sibley Boulevard and Wentworth Avenue. Distance and time are free-flow driving estimates (OSRM), not a promised arrival time.
Calumet City is home base, so a pickup here is the shortest trip we make. Our address is on Harding Avenue, a short drive from Sibley Boulevard. From there a flatbed reaches almost any street in 60409 in a few minutes, which is why many of our same-day pickups are Calumet City cars. This page covers the city the way a tow driver sees it: the main roads, the housing, the parking rules that catch dead cars, and the landmarks people use to tell us where a car is. For the whole pickup area, see the locations page.
The lay of the city
Locals call it Cal City. It was founded in 1893 as West Hammond, from the merger of Schrumville and Sobieski Park, and took the Calumet City name in 1923. About 36,000 people live here (2020 Census), in Thornton Township in Cook County, all under one ZIP code, 60409.
The edges matter for a pickup. Hammond, Indiana, starts at the state line on the east side. Burnham and Chicago border the city on the north, Lansing on the south, and South Holland and Dolton on the west. Our pickups stay on the Illinois side; if a car is across the line, it is outside our area.
Roads a tow truck uses here
Four roads do most of the work:
- Sibley Boulevard (IL 83). The main east-west street. It carries IL 83 through the city and on west through Dolton and Harvey. From Harding Avenue it is the first main road the truck reaches.
- Torrence Avenue. IL 83 and US 6 share Torrence south of Sibley, down to the Kingery Expressway (I-80/I-94).
- The Bishop Ford Freeway (I-94). It runs inside the city limits, so cars on the west side are a quick freeway hop.
- Burnham Avenue and River Oaks Drive. Burnham Avenue is the north-south line toward Burnham and Lansing. River Oaks Drive carries US 6.
When you send the form, a cross street near one of these roads (“Burnham Ave and 157th”) tells the driver more than a mile marker would.
Cal City homes, lots and curbs
Calumet City is a mix. Census figures (ACS 2020-2024) put about 54% of homes in single detached houses and close to 38% in buildings with two or more units, with nearly a quarter in buildings of five units or more. Roughly 56% of occupied homes are owner-occupied.
In practice that means three kinds of pickups:
- Driveways and garages on the blocks of detached houses. These are the easiest. Leave the car unlocked or have the key ready, and clear a path if the garage is tight.
- Apartment and condo lots. Fine with us. If the lot has a manager or a towing sign, tell them a scrap buyer is coming so nobody calls their own tow company first.
- Street and alley cars. A car on the street is fine to pick up; just know the city rules below if it has sat a while.
City parking rules that matter for a dead car
These come from the Calumet City Code of Ordinances, Chapter 90. We link the code so you can read the exact text.
Snow routes. Section 90-304 bans stopping or parking for longer than 3 minutes on a signed snow route once snow is 2 inches deep or more. The listed routes include 155th Place, 156th Street, 157th Street, 163rd Street, 166th Street, State Street, Pulaski Road, Yates Avenue, Crandon Avenue, Luella Avenue and Forsythe Avenue, among others. The city can tow, and the fine runs from $25 to $500. A car that will not start is exactly the car that gets stuck there. See our snow rules article for the other villages we serve.
Temporary no-parking signs. Under section 90-305 the city posts signs at least 48 hours ahead for street cleaning and events. Ignoring them costs at least $100 a day plus towing.
Alleys. Section 90-303 says a parked car must leave at least 8 feet of roadway clear, and nobody may leave a vehicle in an alley for more than 10 minutes except while loading or unloading. Loading a junk car counts, which is how our driver works an alley pickup.
Lawns and parkways. Section 90-322 bars parking on a sidewalk, curb, parkway or any unpaved surface. If the dead car is on the grass beside a garage, it should go.
Repairs at home. Section 90-321 allows repairs on residential property only on the occupant’s own vehicle, and only if it has valid state plates and a current city sticker. A long project car without plates is a problem under this rule.
City vehicle sticker. Section 90-582 requires a city vehicle license for every vehicle registered to a Calumet City address or stored in the city; section 90-584 sets it at $50 a year for a passenger car. Our plates and stickers article covers what to do with plates and the state’s Seller’s Report once the car is gone.

Landmarks drivers use
People here give directions by the two water towers painted as smiley faces, one on Ring Road near River Oaks Mall and the other on State Street near I-94. Those two, Sibley Boulevard and the Torrence Avenue corridor cover most of the “it’s near the…” directions we hear. There is no Metra or South Shore station inside the city, so we rarely get “by the train” directions here.
Papers and payment
Have the title if you can find it. If you can’t, tell us what you do have, such as a registration card, an old bill of sale or an insurance card. Which of those works depends on Illinois scrap-sale rules, and we check it for your car when you call. Read selling without a title before you call if the title is gone. Payment is cash, Zelle or Cash App, handed over when the car is loaded.
Nearby areas we also cover
North of the city, Burnham is two minutes up Torrence or Burnham Avenue, and Hegewisch is just past it inside Chicago. South, Lansing is about ten minutes down Burnham Avenue. A broken-down car anywhere along those routes is a short trip for us, and so is a car that won’t start sitting in your driveway.

Calumet City questions
- How fast can you get to a car in Calumet City?
- Calumet City is our home base, so the drive is short from anywhere in 60409. Same-day pickup is often possible; we set the time with you on the phone once you accept the offer.
- My car is parked on a snow route. What happens if it snows?
- Calumet City Code section 90-304 bars parking for more than 3 minutes on a signed snow route once snow is 2 inches deep, and the city can tow. If the car will not start, call us before the storm so it is gone first.
- Do I need to return my Calumet City vehicle sticker?
- The city code requires a vehicle license for vehicles registered to or stored at a Calumet City address. Ask the city clerk what to do with a sticker on a car you sell; we do not handle city stickers.
- Can you take a car out of an alley behind my house?
- Yes, if the truck can reach it. City Code section 90-303 limits stopping in an alley to 10 minutes except while loading, so we load it and leave. Tell us the alley access when you call.
