Route from 920 Harding Ave: Bishop Ford Freeway, Calumet Expressway (IL 394) and Glenwood-Dyer Road. Distance and time are free-flow driving estimates (OSRM), not a promised arrival time.
Glenwood is almost an island. The village is nearly surrounded by forest preserves, so you reach it by a handful of roads, and those roads are how our driver gets in. From Harding Avenue the route is Sibley Boulevard to the Bishop Ford Freeway, south to the Calumet Expressway (IL 394), then off onto Glenwood-Dyer Road. That’s about 9 miles, roughly 16 minutes with clear roads. Glenwood sits with its neighbors on our locations page.
Where Glenwood is
About 8,700 people live in Glenwood (2020 Census), on 3.3 square miles split between Thornton and Bloom townships. The ZIP code is 60425. Homewood is west, Thornton north, Lynwood east, and Ford Heights and Chicago Heights south. An old beach ridge from glacial Lake Chicago, the Glenwood Shoreline, crosses town.
Halsted Street (IL 1) runs through the middle. The Calumet Expressway passes close to the village line but stays just outside it. Inside the village, the three Glenwood roads (to Dyer, to Lansing and to Chicago Heights) do most of the work, along with Main Street and Joe Orr Road. Buses on Pace’s 352 and 890 use Halsted; there is no train station in Glenwood.
Houses, yards and garages
Glenwood is a single-family town. Census figures (ACS 2020-2024) show about 80% of homes are single detached houses and 79% of occupied homes are owner-occupied, with about 19% in buildings of two or more units. Most pickups here come from a driveway, a garage or a carport, which matters because of the rule below.
The strict rule: no junk cars on open private land
Glenwood’s code is tougher on dead cars than most of its neighbors. From Chapter 102 of the Glenwood Code:
- Section 102-435(a): no keeping a car that doesn’t run, or a junker, on private land. Old collector cars that never get driven are swept in too.
- Section 102-435(b): “private land” here means ground that isn’t under a garage or carport roof. Under a carport or in the garage, the rule doesn’t reach the car; out on the driveway, it does.
- Section 102-435(c): anything heavier than 12,000 pounds gets 6 hours at most on a residential street, lot or yard.
The village police page explains how officers handle junk cars: first a warning sticker; three days later, if nothing has changed, a tow sticker, then a ticket and the car may be taken.
If a warning sticker is on your car, that 72-hour window is your timeline. Call us with the details and ask for the earliest pickup we can offer. We compare this rule with the other villages in our inoperable vehicle rules article.
Abandoned cars and the street
- Section 102-61: “abandoned” means undrivable, or parked a week or longer and apparently left behind.
- Section 102-62: you can’t abandon a car on a street, or anywhere the public can see it except your own property. The village has to warn you, offer a hearing and leave a tow sticker on the car for a week before towing.
- Section 102-426: for 12 hours after 2 inches of snow, no parking on any public street.
- Section 102-438(c): trailers, boat trailers included, can’t stay on a residential street over 6 hours or during the overnight limits.
Overnight rules and the $500 fee
In April 2026 the village added the term “summary nuisance vehicle” to its code (Ord. 2026-007). Section 102-440 covers cars parked overnight, 1 to 6 a.m., on posted residential streets when they carry neither a Glenwood registration nor a village sticker. Those can be towed with no warning, and the owner pays the village $500 on top of the tow bill to get the car back. Guests can call the police to be excused for a week, renewable one time. A car that belongs to a relative who moved away, still sitting at the curb, fits the description.
Village sticker
Every vehicle a resident or local business owns needs a village license (section 102-542). Miss May 1, or 30 days after you bought the car, and the fine is $250. Licenses run through April 30 (section 102-546). For what to do with plates and the Seller’s Report after the car is gone, see plates and stickers after junking.
Schools and landmarks
About half of Glenwood is in the Bloom high school district and half in the Homewood-Flossmoor district, so “near the school” can mean different things. The forest preserves on every side and Halsted Street are the reference points most people give.
Wrecked or just worn out
We take both. A car that won’t start is covered on our non-running car page; a crash-damaged car, including one the insurer has totaled, is on the wrecked and totaled page.
Nearby areas
Thornton lies to the north, Lynwood to the east, and Chicago Heights to the south.

- A warning sticker comes first. Three days later, if the car is still there, a tow sticker follows, then a ticket and possibly a seizure. Call us the day the first sticker appears.
- What is a summary nuisance vehicle in Glenwood?
- It's the label section 102-440 gives a car with no Glenwood registration or sticker parked overnight on a posted residential street. It can be towed on the spot, and release costs $500 to the village plus the tow.
- Do I need a village sticker for a car I'm about to junk?
- Residents must license each vehicle they own, and the year runs to April 30. If the car is about to go, check with the village before you buy a new one.
