How much a junkyard will pay, and why

By Gold Cash for Junk Cars. Last updated October 21, 2026.

What will a junkyard pay for a car?

A junkyard or junk car buyer pays based on the car's weight in metal, how complete it is, whether it runs, that week's scrap prices and your papers. Gold Cash for Junk Cars gives each car its own offer by phone, with free towing and payment at pickup, rather than one posted price that fits nobody.

Call for an offer: (708) 578-8868

It’s the first question everyone asks, and the most common answer online is a price range that tells you nothing. We won’t do that here. Instead, this is how a junk car offer is actually built, so you can judge any number you’re given, ours included.

The five things that set the price

1. Weight

Most of a junk car’s value is the metal in it. A full-size pickup, SUV or van carries far more steel than a compact sedan, so it usually brings more. That’s why we always ask for the year, make and model: it tells us roughly what the car weighs before anyone sees it.

2. Completeness

A car with its engine, transmission, wheels and catalytic converter is worth more than a shell. Each missing major part takes something off. That isn’t a trick; those parts are where much of the value outside the body sits. If someone pulled the engine years ago, say so on the call and the offer will reflect it.

3. Whether it runs

A car that starts and drives can be worth more than its metal to someone. A car that doesn’t run is valued closer to scrap. In between are cars that run badly, which is where honest descriptions matter most.

4. The scrap market that week

Metal prices move. An offer that was right three months ago may not be right today, which is why a fixed price list on a website goes stale fast. We quote on the day.

5. Papers

In Illinois a scrap sale needs documentary proof of ownership. Under 625 ILCS 5/5-401.3, that means a title, salvage certificate, junking certificate, certificate of purchase or similar proof, plus two IDs from a private seller. A car without workable papers may not sell at all, so papers matter more than any dent. See selling without a title.

What usually doesn’t matter much

  • Cosmetic damage. Dents and faded paint barely move a scrap offer.
  • Where it is, within our area. The tow is free, so a car in Ford Heights or Chicago Heights isn’t penalized for distance.
  • Mileage, once a car is clearly headed for scrap.

The questions we ask, and why

We ask Because
Year, make, model Tells us size and weight
Does it run? Does it roll? Running value, and how it loads
What’s missing or damaged? Completeness
Do you have the title? Whether the sale can happen at all
Where is it? Access for the truck

The quote form asks the first and fourth questions; we ask the rest on the call. Then you get one number. If you accept it, that’s what you are paid at pickup, by cash, Zelle or Cash App.

When an offer changes at pickup

Only if the car isn’t what was described: an engine that was said to be there and isn’t, a car that was said to run and doesn’t. Describe it honestly and the number holds.

Is junking the right call?

If repairs cost more than the car would be worth fixed, selling usually wins. One Cook County example is a car that keeps failing emissions, where the plates can’t be renewed until it passes or gets a waiver. Our emissions article covers that decision. And if you’re weighing a yard against a buyer who comes to you, read junkyard or junk car buyer.

Questions people ask

How do you calculate the scrap value of a car?
Start with its weight, since most of a junk car's value is metal. Then adjust for missing parts like the engine, transmission, wheels or catalytic converter, and for the scrap market that week. A buyer's offer also accounts for the tow and the papers.
Why won't you post a price list?
A single figure would miss for most cars. Two cars of the same model can differ in completeness and condition, and scrap prices move. We quote the actual car.
Does a car that runs get more?
Usually, because a running car is worth more than its metal to someone. Tell us honestly whether it runs; if the driver finds otherwise at pickup, the offer may change.
Will towing come out of my offer?
Not with us. The tow is free and the offer you accept is what you are paid.
