Route from 920 Harding Ave: Burnham Avenue south through Lansing. Distance and time are free-flow driving estimates (OSRM), not a promised arrival time.
Lynwood is the southeast corner of our area, right on the Indiana line, and the drive is one long road. From Harding Avenue, the truck turns onto Burnham Avenue and follows it south through Lansing to Lynwood, about 7 miles and roughly 14 minutes. Lynwood is listed with the other villages on our locations page.
A newer village on the state line
Lynwood was founded in 1959, which makes it young for this part of Cook County. It has about 9,100 people (2020 Census) on 5 square miles in Bloom Township. Its ZIP code, 60411, is shared with Sauk Village (and parts of Chicago Heights), so always give us the village name with the address.
Lansing is to the north, Glenwood to the west, Ford Heights and Sauk Village to the south, and the Indiana state line runs along the whole southeast edge. Parts of the village are suburban subdivisions; parts are still farmland. On a farm road a driveway can be long and unpaved, so tell us if the car is back from the road.
Highways meet here
Three state routes end or cross in Lynwood:
- US 30 (Lincoln Highway) reaches its Illinois east end at the Indiana line in Lynwood. Section 102-247 of the village code bans parking along a stretch of it.
- IL 83 has its southern end at US 30 in Lynwood. It starts on Glenwood-Dyer Road and then follows Torrence Avenue north into Lansing, so the Torrence Avenue and Glenwood-Dyer Road junction is in the village.
- IL 394 (the Calumet Expressway) crosses Glenwood-Dyer Road inside Lynwood.
Pace Route 358 runs through the village too.
Housing, including mobile home parks
Lynwood’s housing mix is unusual for the area. Census figures (ACS 2020-2024) show about 54% single detached houses, about 21% of homes in buildings with two or more units, and nearly 23% mobile homes. The village code even has a separate chapter on manufactured homes and trailers (Chapter 66). About 75% of occupied homes are owner-occupied.
A pickup at a mobile home park is no harder than a driveway, but the park office may want notice before a tow truck comes in. Have the lot number ready, and if the car is wedged between homes, tell us how much room there is.
Lynwood’s street parking rules
From Chapter 102 of the Lynwood Code:
- Overnight ban: section 102-246(1) bars parking any motor vehicle, truck, trailer or motorcycle on any street, alley or public way between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. A car that won’t start can’t come in off the street at night, so it can’t be left there.
- Lots and closed businesses: the same section bars parking on vacant lots or at closed businesses, and overnight parking on commercial property without a link to the business.
- For Sale cars: they can’t be parked on vacant lots, unpaved surfaces or the public way, and must carry a current license.
- Snow: section 102-248 says that once snow on a street is more than 2 inches deep, parking is banned (beyond 3-minute passenger and 30-minute loading stops) from the start of the snowfall until 8 hours after it stops, and through plowing.
- Permit zones: section 102-249 allows signed resident-only parking zones with a decal or visitor placard; the 2 a.m. ban and the snow rule still apply in them.

Dead cars on private property
Section 86-121 says a partially dismantled, wrecked, junked, discarded or nonoperating vehicle may not remain on any property for more than 10 days. It is exempt if kept in an enclosed building or not readily visible from public places or neighboring property, if it is at a lawful non-residential business, or if it is in public storage. Source: Lynwood Code section 86-121. We compare that 10-day window with the rest of the south suburbs in our inoperable vehicle rules article.
Village vehicle sticker
Section 102-79 requires vehicles owned, housed or registered in Lynwood to carry a village license, with 30 days to get one after moving in. Ask the village what to do with the sticker of a car you sell; we don’t handle village stickers.
Bigger vehicles
If the vehicle is a pickup, a van or an old work truck, we buy it the same way as a car; see junk trucks, vans and SUVs. For a heavy truck, tell us the make and size so the right tow truck comes. Towing is free either way, as described on our free towing page.

North of Lynwood, Lansing sits on the same Burnham Avenue route. West is Glenwood, and to the south Sauk Village shares Lynwood’s ZIP code.

Lynwood questions
- Can a car that doesn't run stay on the street overnight in Lynwood?
- No car can. Lynwood Code section 102-246(1) bars parking any motor vehicle, truck, trailer or motorcycle on a street, alley or public way from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m.
- How long can a non-running car stay in my yard in Lynwood?
- Section 86-121 says a partially dismantled, wrecked, junked, discarded or nonoperating vehicle may not remain on any property for more than 10 days, unless it is in an enclosed building or not readily visible from public places or neighboring property.
- Do you pick up from mobile home parks in Lynwood?
- Yes. About 23% of Lynwood homes are mobile homes, so a park pickup is an ordinary job here. Let the park office know a car is being towed out and give us the lot number.
- Can I sell a car I have listed for sale on the street?
- Under section 102-246, a vehicle shown For Sale can't sit on vacant lots, unpaved ground or the public way, and it must carry a current license. Selling it to us avoids that problem.
