Junk it, sell it privately or trade it in: a comparison
By Gold Cash for Junk Cars. Last updated October 21, 2026.
Should I junk my car, sell it privately or trade it in?
It depends on the car. A running car in decent shape often brings more from a private buyer or as a trade-in. A car that doesn't run, failed emissions or needs a repair worth more than it is usually sells fastest to a junk car buyer like Gold Cash for Junk Cars, which tows it free from Calumet City and pays at pickup.
Every old car leaves through one of three doors: a private buyer, a dealer’s trade-in desk or a junk car buyer. Which one pays off depends far more on the car’s condition than on anything else. Here is how they compare for someone in Calumet City or the towns around it.
Side by side
| Junk car buyer | Private sale | Dealer trade-in | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who travels | We come to the car | Buyers come to you | You drive the car to the dealer |
| Car has to run | No | Usually, or the price drops sharply | Usually |
| Time to a sale | Often the same day | Days to weeks, sometimes never | Same day as your new purchase |
| Your work | One call or form | Photos, ads, calls, test drives | Bringing it in |
| Strangers at your home | One driver at a set time | Several, often | None |
| How you’re paid | Cash, Zelle or Cash App at pickup | Whatever you agree; watch for bad checks | Credit toward the car you buy |
| Needs a purchase | No | No | Yes |
| Best for | Dead, wrecked or failed cars | Running cars with life left | Running cars when you’re buying anyway |
When a private sale wins
A car that starts, drives and passes its emissions test is usually worth more to someone who wants to drive it than to anyone who’ll scrap it. If you have time, a clean title and the patience for messages from strangers, list it. Meet in daylight, don’t sign the title until you’re paid, and file the paperwork below either way.
When a trade-in wins
If you’re already buying a car from a dealer, a trade-in saves you the whole selling process. The catch is that a trade-in is a credit, not money in your hand, and it only exists if you buy. A dealer may also offer little for a car it will just send to auction or scrap.
When junking wins
Once a car stops running, fails emissions or needs a repair bigger than its value, the other two doors mostly close. Private buyers want something drivable, and getting a dead car to a dealer means paying for a tow yourself. That’s the car we buy: we come to it, load it where it sits and pay at pickup, with the tow free. If you’re stuck between repair and sale, read blown engine or dead transmission: fix the car or sell it? For how our offer is worked out, see what a junkyard pays.
The paperwork is the same for all three
Illinois doesn’t change the seller’s duties based on who buys the car:
- Sign the title over in the assignment section when the car changes hands (625 ILCS 5/3-112).
- Keep the plates. They belong to you, not the car.
- File the Seller’s Report of Sale, form VSD 703, which the Secretary of State says releases your responsibility for the vehicle. Source: VSD 703.

Next step
If your car belongs in the junk column, send the form or call (708) 578-8868 for a number you can compare. The offer doesn’t run out, so you can still try a private sale first. We pick up in Burnham, Lynwood and the rest of our area with free towing. More guides are on our articles page.
Questions people ask
- Is it better to sell a car privately or trade it in?
- A private sale can bring more money for a car that runs well, but you handle the ads, the calls and the test drives. A trade-in is faster and only works when you're buying another car from that dealer.
- Does a dealer accept a non-running car as a trade-in?
- Some will, at a low credit, and some won't. Ask before you tow it there. A junk car buyer comes to the car instead.
- Do I still file paperwork if I junk the car?
- Yes. However you sell, Illinois asks you to sign the title over to the buyer and file the Seller's Report of Sale. The plates stay with you.
- Can I try a private sale first and junk it later?
- Yes. Our offer doesn't expire, so you can list the car, see what happens and call us back if it doesn't sell.
