Selling a junk car with no keys

By Gold Cash for Junk Cars. Last updated October 21, 2026.

Can I still sell my junk car after losing the keys?

Yes. Gold Cash for Junk Cars buys cars with lost, broken or missing keys around Calumet City, because Illinois asks for proof of ownership, not a key. Tell us there's no key so the driver plans for locked doors, a steering lock or a car stuck in park, then sell it like any junk car and get paid at pickup.

Keys go missing in all the usual ways: lost when the car was parked for good, snapped off in the ignition, left with an ex, or inside a car that locked itself. None of that stops a junk car sale in Illinois. Here’s what the state actually asks for, and how a missing key changes the pickup.

Why the title matters and the key doesn’t

A key opens the car. It doesn’t prove who owns it. Illinois spells out what a scrap buyer must collect, and a key isn’t on the list. Under 625 ILCS 5/5-401.3, a private seller has to hand over documentary proof of ownership, such as a certificate of title, a salvage certificate, a junking certificate or a certificate of purchase, and the buyer must record two forms of the seller’s ID, one of them a driver’s license or State ID. Source: 625 ILCS 5/5-401.3.

So the real question for a no-key car is the same as for any other: do you have the title, or papers we can confirm on the call? If the title is the thing that’s lost, start with replacing a lost Illinois title.

What a missing key changes on pickup day

The paperwork is the same; the loading isn’t. Tell us which of these applies so the driver comes ready:

Situation What it means at pickup What to tell us
Doors unlocked, no key The car may be stuck in park and the steering wheel locked “No key, doors open”
Doors locked, no key We can load it locked, but nobody can check inside Whether anything you need is still inside
Key broken in the ignition Same as no key; the stub may block a spare Leave the stub alone
Push-button start, fob lost The car may not shift out of park Make and model year
Title or papers locked inside The sale can’t go ahead until they’re out Call a locksmith first
Car in a garage with the opener lost We need a way into the garage, not the car Who can open it

A car that can’t be put in neutral can still be loaded; it just takes a little longer, which is why we ask. Cars that don’t run at all are covered on our non-running cars page.

Is a replacement key worth buying first?

Rarely, for a junk car. Modern keys and fobs often have to be cut and programmed for that car, and the bill can be a large share of what an old car is worth. Before you pay for one, ask the locksmith or dealer for the price, then compare it with our offer for the car as it is. The exception is when the key is the only way to get the title out of the car; then a locksmith opening the door is the cheaper fix.

Get your things out while you can

A car with no key often hasn’t been opened in a long time. Before pickup, if you can get in:

  1. Check the glove box, the console, under the seats and the trunk.
  2. Take out garage openers, toll transponders and parking permits.
  3. Remove the license plates; they stay with you in Illinois. Our plates and stickers article covers the Seller’s Report of Sale.

If you can’t get in at all, tell us. We’ll still buy the car, and you’ll know before the driver arrives that whatever is inside goes with it.

Questions people ask

Will a scrap yard take a car without a key?
A key isn't on Illinois' list of documents a scrap buyer needs. The law asks for proof of ownership, such as a title, and two IDs from a private seller. We buy cars with no key at all.
Does a missing key lower the offer?
Usually not much, since the value is mostly the car itself. What can change the number is what the missing key hides, like a car we can't open to check or papers locked inside.
The title is locked in the glove box. What now?
Get the car opened first, by a locksmith or a spare key, and take the title out before pickup day. We need the title in your hand to sign it over.
Are old car keys worth any money?
Not to us. Hand over any keys you have with the car, but they don't add to the offer, and you don't need to buy a new one to sell a junk car.
